Scholarships

We're investing £4.3 million in our scholarship programmes to help ensure that anyone who is qualified to come to Aston University can do so, regardless of their financial circumstances.

We estimate that around 65% of our students will be eligible for a scholarship from Aston University of between £1,000 and £5,000 in total over the length of their course.

Our scholarships give you a discount on your tuition fees and mean that a degree from Aston will cost you less than it would from many other universities - helping a great investment become an even better one.

Scholarships are only available for eligible UK/EU students applying to Aston University for 2012 undergraduate first year entry who are subject to the new 2012 funding arrangements.

  • If you are eligible for more than one type of scholarship, the full £1,000 placement year tuition fee waiver only applies once.

These Aston scholarships are based on your household income, which is the total amount your family earns each year before tax and National Insurance. Visit the Student Finance England website for details on the definitions of household income.

Remember that whatever your household income, if you achieve AAB or above at A Level (or equivalent), you will be entitled to an Aston Excellence Scholarship.

Applying - UK and EU students who apply to Aston University for 2012 undergraduate entry will be able to apply for support from the UK Government and Aston University from January 2012 via Student Finance England (SFE). We will automatically use the information you supply to SFE to assess your eligibility for an Aston household income based scholarship - you do not need to apply for the scholarship separately. Income based Scholarships are subject to annual assessment of household income.

Aston Progression Scholarship

The Aston Progression Scholarship is available to all Home and EU undergraduates with a household income of between £18,001 and £42,000.

The scholarship gives you a £500 tuition fee discount for every year of study except your placement year and years when you receive another type of Aston household income-based scholarship.

You could also be eligible for an Aston Excellence Scholarship.

Aston Advantage Scholarship

The Aston Advantage Scholarship is available to all Home and EU undergraduates with a household income of over £14,500 and up to £18,000.

The scholarship consists of a £1,000 discount on your first year tuition fee, and a full £1,000 discount on your placement year fee. If you are studying our Pharmacy programme, which has a pre-registration year rather than a placement year, you will receive a £1,000 tuition fee waiver in your third year.

If you are eligible for an Aston Advantage Scholarship, you will also qualify for the Aston Progression Scholarship in your second and final years, so your Aston income-based scholarships could total £3,000 over a typical four year degree. You could also be eligible for an Aston Excellence Scholarship.

National Scholarship Programme

Aston is part of a Government initiative, the National Scholarship Programme (NSP). The NSP at Aston is designed to support English domiciled students with a household income of up to £14,500, who live in University accommodation on campus.

The NSP offers a £3,000 discount on your first year tuition fee and all full £1,000 discount on your placement year fee. If you are studying on our Pharmacy degree programme, which has a pre-registration year rather than a placement year, you will receive a £1,000 tuition fee waiver in your third year.

The National Scholarship Programme at Aston covers your first year, after which the Aston Progression Scholarship is available. This means that over a typical four year Aston degree, your total Aston scholarships could amount to £5,000, or more if you are eligible for an Aston Excellence Scholarship.

The NSP is limited to 166 scholarships in 2012. Eligible students who are not awarded the NSP will qualify for other Aston income based scholarships.

If you achieve AAB or above in your A Levels (or equivalent), you are eligible for the Aston Excellence Scholarship. This is not subject to household income. AAB equivalents (PDF).

The Scholarship consists of a £1,000 discount on your first, second and final year tuition fee and a full £1,000 tuition fee discount on your placement year. If you are studying our Pharmacy programme, which has a pre-registration year after graduation rather than a placement year, you will receive a £1,000 tuition fee discount in your third year.

If you are eligible for our Excellence Scholarship and qualify for one of our Household Income-Based Scholarships, you will receive both, although the £1,000 placement year tuition fee waiver does not count twice.

Aston University already attracts high achieving students. In September 2011 over 35% of our new students had achieved AAB or above at A Level or equivalent.

The number of Aston Excellence Scholarships we will award is not limited. If you achieve AAB+ at A Level (or equivalent), you will be entitled to the scholarship.

Applying

You do not need to apply for an Aston Excellence Scholarship. The University will automatically assess your eligibility when you apply and when you receive your A Level (or equivalent) results.

We want to encourage as many students as possible to take a placement year or year abroad, so we have set the tuition fee for this year at just £1,000. Thanks to our range of scholarships, we estimate that the majority of Aston students will not pay a fee for their placement year.

If you are eligible for the National Scholarship, the Aston Advantage Scholarship or the Aston Excellence Scholarships, you will not pay a placement year fee. If you take an unpaid placement or year abroad, you are eligible for the Aston Placement Scholarship (below).

Aston Placement Scholarship for unpaid placement years

Most placement students are paid a salary by their employer, but if you take an unpaid placement year or year abroad, you will receive a full £1,000 discount on your tuition fee for that year.

The Aston Placement Scholarship is offered irrespective of family income.

Please note the Aston Placement Scholarship is not be available if you are already receiving a placement year fee discount from one of Aston’s other scholarship programmes.
