Business Computing and IT is taught entirely within Aston Business School and is approximately 60% business and 40% computing and IT, with an emphasis on the integration of the two disciplines.
Year 1
You will follow the Aston Business School common first year studying a wide range of business subjects. This approach gives you a solid foundation in all of the key areas of business and management which is required by all business professionals. The modules are:
From the second year onwards your studies focus on business computing and IT and will involve ‘hands-on’ work with spreadsheets, databases, simulations and knowledge-based systems. Organisational aspects you will cover will include systems analysis and decision support, whilst management aspects will include effective management consultancy and the management of IT resources within a business. Year 3 - Placement year
The placement year will give you valuable practical experience of business computing and IT in an industrial, commercial or public sector organisation. You will spend this year in professional placement or you may choose to take up an international study opportunity at one of our partner institutions. This year is compulsory for all UK and EU students.

You will experience a range of teaching methods including lectures, tutorials, group-working, case studies and both individual and group presentations. Traditional teaching is supported by a virtual learning environment that is used to host a range of electronic supporting materials.
For example all business students undertake the Business Game module and compete in teams in a computer simulation exercise that culminates in a presentation to a panel of external employers

I joined Astn Business School in 2008 and I am now the Course Director for the Business Computing and IT degree. I teach undergraduate courses on business computing, web development and e-business, as well as graduate courses on data mining. As Course Director an important part of my role is to be a point of contact for students if they have academic issues they want to discuss.
There are two things that inspire me in teaching: first is building the relationship with the students, and second is the sense that one can inspire people to think differently about the world around them. My research concerns ways of extracting, integrating and presenting knowldege so that businesses and organisations can make better decisions. This work greatly influences my teaching and my capacity to inspire students. I was very pleased that a group of students took ideas from one of my courses and created a start-up business this past summer.
