Living off campus

In Birmingham, private rented accommodation for students is easy to find and relatively inexpensive. The vast majority of our second year, and some of our final year students live off-campus. We encourage first year students moving away from their family home to live on campus in our University residences - to ensure they have easy access to social, support and academic facilities.

As a guide, rent (2008) for a room in a shared house is around £65 per week. Areas popular with students include Erdington, Edgbaston, Selly Oak and various private student apartment developments in the Birmingham city centre,  5-10 minutes’ walk from campus.

Bus, metro and train services in the city are frequent, extensive and cheap with a termly Birmingham student travel card costing around £100.

Help finding off-campus accommodation

The Student Advice Centre in the Students’ Guild has a register of local houses, flats, bedsits and lodgings for those students looking for accommodation off campus. Staff are always happy to advise on tenancy agreements, tenants’ or landlords’ rights, safety in the home and help sort out any problems which may arise. They also have a website, www.studentpad.com/aston, advertising student housing which meets the Guild’s standards.

Living with your parents

Some of our students from the local West Midlands area choose to live at home with their family/parents and still take a full and active part in campus life - socially and academically.
