Duration:
Between 1 and 3 years Distance Learning

The programme comprises of 6 modules. Students can have a sabbatical for 1 year, can take 3 modules per year to complete the programme in 2 years or 2 modules per year to complete in 3 years.

Location of course:
Distance Learning incorporates work-based learning and short tutorial and lab classes at Aston University or an approved satellite location within the UK.

Entry requirements:
  • An Aston Foundation degree in Power Engineering or equivalent

Tuition fees:
£9,000 (2012) paid either in full or by instalments depending on the delivery period selected.

Course outline

The Professional Engineering (Power Systems) course is a progression pathway with 120 credits weighting, designed to give a route from foundation degrees to a BEng/BSc. It is offered to those who hold 240 credits from Aston Foundation Degree (or equivalent) in power engineering or other related topic. The course provides the advanced engineering knowledge and understanding needed to qualify for incorporated engineer (IEng) status, and helps with building the range of practical competences also needed for IEng.

The programme has six modules. There are four technical modules each worth 20 credits, a professional development audit module worth 10 credits and a work-based project module worth 30 credits.

Learning & teaching
Learning and teaching is undertaken through Distance Learning using a Virtual Learning Environment (Blackboard) using the following:

The BEng Professional Engineering course is approved, delivered and managed by Aston University, but support for and recognition of the course is much broader.

As part of the BEng we will work with you to draw up a plan for achieving the full range of personal development expected of an Incorporated Engineer under UKSPEC (the UK standard for professional engineering competence). As well as technical competence, this includes the ability to provide technical and commercial leadership, strong interpersonal/communication skills, and a personal commitment to professional standards, society in general and the environment.

Course Director

Dr Nagi Fahmi

Dr Nagi Fahmi is a staff member of the Power Engineering System Group at Aston University, UK. He is currently Course Director of the Professional Engineering (Power Systems) programme. He has been Member of the Institution of Engineering & Technology and Chartered Engineering since 1993. His research focuses on power system analysis and power system control.
