Engineering and Applied Science

The School’s research is focused around 4 strategic themes: communications and sensing, health (biomedical engineering, biomimetic materials, bioinformatics), bioenergy and sustainability, and modelling of complex systems (physical, statistical/probabilistic, and knowledge engineering). The academic teams are organised in five research groups based on common disciplines and facilities, to ensure coherent strength in core disciplines. The strategic themes run across the groups, bringing staff together into multidisciplinary teams.

Generic training for research students is delivered through an integrated programme of Research Skills Training. In addition, PhD students often take modules from our Research MSc degrees (eg: MRes Photonic Networks) to provide discipline specifi c training. Across the School there are facilities dedicated for student use, and all are supplied with individual computers.

If you have any questions or to make an application, please contact a potential supervisor or research group or the Research Student Administrator (seasres@aston.ac.uk).
