Research programmes (PhD & MPhil)

All Aston research students are registered, in the first instance, for an unspecified higher degree by research and thesis. On satisfactory completion of the first year of supervised research, based on a satisfactory qualifying report, each student may be recommended for registration either for the degree of MPhil (Master of Philosophy) or for the degree of PhD (Doctor of Philosophy).

MPhil - Master of Philosophy

MPhil degrees normally take two years to complete and look at critically investigating and evaluating an approved topic which represents a contribution to knowledge and shows a critical appreciation of existing knowledge in the field, whilst demonstrating an understanding of research methods appropriate to the chosen field. Students are required to present and defend a substantial thesis to the satisfaction of the examiners.

PhD - Doctor of Philosophy

PhD degrees usually take three years to complete. The key difference is that PhD degrees must also involve a substantial original contribution to knowledge and show a critical appreciation of existing knowledge in the field.

DBA - Doctorate in Business Administration

Aston Business School also offers a Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA), which is a professional doctorate and is a structured programme of study, requiring students to undertake a substantial original investigation into a real business and management issue. Its aim is to create innovative and robust management knowledge, within which to make significant and long lasting changes to practice and organisations. Students will gain a well respected qualification that clearly demonstrates their intellectual and innovative capabilities. More details >>
