Pharmacy Summer School 29 July - 25 August
This interactive, specialist course is for pharmacists, pharmacy graduates and final year pharmacy students that are interested in gaining awareness of pharmacy practice and clinical pharmacy in the United Kingdom. In particular, overseas-trained pharmacists that intend on working in the UK may find this introductory course of benefit. UK based pharmacists and pre-registration pharmacists may also be interested in attending the clinical therapeutics week (Week 3) or selected days thereof as part of their Continuing Professional Development. Due to the clinical opportunities provided by this course, participant numbers are limited.
Summer School Programme
The programme is divided into the following weeks:

Week 1: This week is designed solely for overseas participants. The week consists of English Language tuition sessions (intermediate to advanced).

Week 2: This week is also designed for overseas participants. In the mornings you will continue to attend English sessions (see Week 1). In the afternoons you will attend workshops aimed at familiarising participants with the UK health care system, health needs of the UK population and UK pharmacy regulations. The workshops will be run as small-group, interactive sessions.

Week 3: This week consists of workshops in the mornings and afternoons focusing on UK community pharmacy services, UK hospital pharmacy and five clinical therapy workshops. The workshops will be run as small-group, interactive sessions and be case-based.

Week 4: Consists of experiential placements in a variety of healthcare settings in the UK health care system. The sessions will incorporate an overview of the pharmacy service and ‘shadowing’ experienced pharmacists. The final day will incorporate a workshop on clinical case presentations. In the afternoon, delegates will be provided the opportunity to present a case study with feedback provided.
Delegates can attend for all of the programme or selected weeks/days. Delegates attending for full weeks are able to stay in on campus accommodation at a reduced rate. Some delegates will prefer to attend only one day or a combination of days.
Other activities
There will be social events planned in the evenings and weekends for attendees of the summer school, such as a reception with the Vice Chancellor and a reception with the Lord Mayor of Birmingham. Additionally, there are optional events including evening meals or a trip to London (at the weekend) or a trip to Stratford on Avon.
