Careers advice & support

Aston's award winning Careers & Employability Centre
Our outstanding record for graduate employment is supported by our well-equipped Careers & Employability Centre and its team of highly experienced Careers Advisors who will support you during your studies and for up to three years after you graduate.  

We have strong relationships with employers and over 200 organisations come onto campus each year to meet our students.

When you join Aston, you'll be given an introductory tour of the Careers Service, to help you make the most of the resources and expertise on offer. 

Information & services in the Centre
In the Centre you'll find everything you need to start researching employers and planning your career. We have a well-stocked careers library with a varied range of specialist careers literature for you to borrow.

We work closely with Aston's Schools of Study to provide careers information and advice tailored to individual courses.

Careers Advisors

You can arrange one-on-one meetings with our friendly and experienced Careers Advisors to discuss any careers-related issues, such as:

• finding the right career

• CV and application form construction

• interview and assessment centre preparation

• employer research

• job offer decisions

Training and events

The Careers Centre organise a wide range of events on campus through the year. Over 100 events are held each year - this is a small sample of what was offered in 2011:

• Mock interviews - practice before you go to the real thing!

• Recruitment fairs

• Employer presentations and visits

• Effective interviews and assessment centres

• Networking skills

• Networking events with graduate/placement employers

• Working in the UK - Visa law for international students

Online information and services

Our Careers website provides a great starting point for your career research and job search. Many areas of the site are password protected, making them  exclusively available to Aston students and graduates.

Online you can:

• view graduate jobs, placements and work experience opportunities
  added by employers targeting Aston students. You can also sign up to receive regular email alerts when new jobs arrive in your chosen area 

• access our exclusive online guidance packages including psychometric
  practice, virtual mock interviews, international information and careers
  management tools

   

• access careers information written by our experts on topics
  including: networking, postgraduate study, assessment centres,
  placement support, employability skills, telephone interviews, commercial awareness, self employment, volunteering, giving presentations and much more

• book onto careers events or book an appointment with a Careers Advisor 

• find out what Aston graduates have gone on to do with statistical
  information by course, and case studies about life after University

• read the weekly Careers Newsletter to keep up-to-date with the latest
  graduate news and views.

Careers support for international students

We offer additional services for international students, such as: 

• information on working in the UK and visa law

• guidance on searching for a job in your home country

• guidance on preparing application forms and CVs and attending interviews

• an employer leaflet designed to market Aston international students to graduate recruiters.

We also work with employers to ensure they are aware of the benefits of hiring an international graduate from Aston University.
