The University is firmly committed to the principles of sustainability. It acknowledges its responsibility for reducing carbon emissions and overall energy consumption. However it is the duty of the whole University, including staff and students, to conduct themselves in such a way as to conserve energy and thereby contribute to safeguarding the environment. The University has accordingly devised a University-wide Environmental Policy from which this Environmental Policy for Students in Halls of residence is derived. The University-wide policy is [shown below] and students are encouraged to adopt its general principles of pollution reduction.
In addition, students in the University’s Halls of Residence should adopt the following good practices when living in Halls:
Switch off lights
- Switch off lights when leaving the room, even if only temporarily
- Think whether you need to turn the light on. Making use of the natural light is an easy way to reduce carbon emissions
Switch off electrical appliances when you have finished using them
- Switching off electrical appliances when you are not using them can save CO2 production
- If possible, switch off all electrical items at the socket when not in use
- Otherwise, make use of energy-saving features such as standby and auto-off facilities on computers, televisions and similar appliances
Heating
- Keep doors and windows shut to get the most efficient use of heating facilities when they are switched on
- Ensure heating facilities are not blocked by furniture or other items, as these will absorb the heat
Recycling
- Make use of recycling facilities for paper, glass and cans to reduce waste
Water
- Ensure taps are turned off when sinks are not in use
