On 29th April, a celebration evening was held to acknowledge, thank and reward the hard work and commitment of Aston students in supporting their fellow students.
Professor Helen Higson praised the achievements of this year’s Peer Mentors and Writing Mentors, who received certificates and awards for their involvement in the programmes.
Peer Mentoring, co-ordinated by the Learner Enhancement Team, had 475 participants this year, with mentors supporting mentees through every step of their studies at Aston and enabling all students to make the most of their learning experience.
Second year Pharmacy student Shaheeda Begum, who received the award of Mentor of the Year, received this commendation from her mentee: 'During the very first few weeks of my first term I felt that I would not be able to survive until the end of the term, until I signed up for this scheme and got my mentor. She made me realise that everybody goes through that stage at the start and I started to feel like I belonged. She didn’t feel like a mentor but more like a friend.'
Eight Writing Mentors are employed by The Learning Development Centre (LDC) as part of the ‘Write Now’ scheme, and between them have held over 370 mentoring sessions this year, helping students to improve their academic writing.
John Murray of the LDC said, 'We would like to thank all the mentors for their hard work in making the scheme a success. In particular, we would like to thank Vladislav Mackevic, a second year from LSS. His outstanding contribution in promoting the scheme has been invaluable and greatly appreciated.'
