Sport Aston has been awarding up to £500 to talented sports people who study at Aston University for 7 years.
The scholarship scheme aims to help attract talented sports people, who are also academically bright to study here at Aston University, and to have them representing Aston University in a BUCS team or individual event. The scholarship is used for specialist coaching, gym membership, physio or equipment to enable them to continue to develop in their chosen sport whilst here at Aston.
This year Sport Aston has awarded seven scholarships:
Mohsan Hussain is a Snowboarder who is studying for a PhD in Engineering. Mohsan was a Sports Scholar last year and also received the Sportsman of the Year Award from the Students Union. Mohsan and the Snow sports club also won Club of the Year from the Students Union. As well as all that he has placed well in both the BUCS competitions and the British Army Snowboarding Championships. This year Mohsan is aiming to beat his best finish of 7th in the BUCS event and 4th in last year’s British Army Indoor Championships.
Filip Kobielski is s sailor who is studying International Business Management at Aston. He is competing at a very high level in his sport and has achieved some great results. Filip reached 6th place in the World Championships in 2012 in Argentina and 4th place in the Youth European Championships in 2010. This year he is aiming to break into the top 20 sailors in the world. Filip has already competed in the BUCS sailing event and came 2nd in the Laser class.
Philip Hewitt is a swimmer who is studying Chemical Engineering. Philip has been the ASA Midlands Youth Champion in the 100m Butterfly and reached the semi-final of the ASA National Youth Championship in the 50m Freestyle. Philip has already competed in one BUCS swimming event this year and came 37th in the 50m freestyle event. He is also aiming to go one better in the ASA National Youth Championship and reach the final.
Dana Ivanova is a skier who is studying an International Business and Management course. Dana has been very successful in her sport over the last few years and cam 2nd out of the female Midlands Event. In the BUCS event her best result was 8th in the Slalom. This year Dana is aiming to improve on both of these results and to maintain the growth and success the Aston Snow Sports Club have had.
Dashuai Zhang is a table tennis player and is studying in his second year of a Mathematics degree. Dashuai was a sports scholar last year and was the British Collages Championship Champion and is playing in the Susses County Seniors 1st Team. This year Dashuai is aiming to be crowned the British Colleges Champion again and to break into the top 10 of players in England.
Elizabeth Archer is a Hockey player currently in her second year studying Business Management. Elizabeth has been playing hockey for 7 years and has developed her natural talent into a high level of skill. Elizabeth has played for the England Universities Team in the Home Nations tournament in 2012 and is hoping to be selected to play again this year. As well as representing Aston in the BUCS Women’s Hockey team she also plays for Cannock Hockey club.
Joanne Ellett is a rugby player who is currently studying Design Engineering. Joanne has helped to set up Aston’s Women’s Rugby Club and plays in the BUCS competition for the Aston team. Joanne also plays for the North Midlands. This year Joanne is aiming to play in all BUCS matches for Aston Ladies and try out for the Midlands and Army team.
