The University Senate has recently agreed to a change in the undergraduate term structure, in order to extend the mid-year examination period, which will affect term dates for the 2009/10 academic year.
The principal reason for the change is to accommodate the decision of the School of Engineering & Applied Science to move 35 examinations for modules delivered in Teaching Period 1 from the summer examination period to the mid-year examination period - thus enabling the School to provide earlier feedback to students on their performance. Two additional days will be added to the start of the Second Term giving two more days for mid-sessional examinations which should also result in a better spread of examinations for most students. In compensation two days will taken from the end of the Third Term.
The new term dates are as follows:
International Welcome - Commenced 22 September 2009 (no change)
Aston Welcome - Commences 27 September 2009 (no change)
First Term - 4 October to 19 December 2009 (no change)
New Second Term - 10 January to 27 March 2010
Mid-Sessional Examinations - 11 January to 23 January 2010
New Third Term - 18 April to 12 June 2010
Summer Examinations - 10 May to 12 June 2010
Summer Degree Congregations - 13 to 16 July 2010 (no change)
Referred Examinations - 1 to 7 September 2010 (no change)
The University is aware that, as this change is being implemented at very short notice, there is a risk that some students may have pre-booked holidays and flights etc which will mean that they will not be able to attend on 11 and 12 January 2010. If students are in this position they should inform their School Office by 1 November 2009 so that the Examinations Office can attempt to schedule their examinations after these dates or, if this not possible, so that their School can make alternative arrangements. If students do not inform their School Office by 1 November 2009 that they are unable to attend on 11 and 12 January 2010, the University may not be able to make alternative arrangements in the mid-sessional examination period and they may be required to take their examination(s) in the summer examination period.
