International students from across Birmingham took to the stage in the hope of becoming the next big singing sensation at a competition held in the Students’ Guild in March.
The University’s Hong Kong and Chinese Student Societies launched Aston’s first ‘A* Star Awards’ – an exclusive oriental singing competition - which drew an audience of over 200 staff and students. Students from the University, Matthew Boulton College and Birmingham City University had to audition for one of ten places available in the final.
‘Idealee’ from Matthew Boulton College won the judges vote to become the A* winner and received a £200 cash prize.
Girl group ‘Zebra’ from Aston won the category of ‘Best Dressed Act’. They said; ‘We are shocked by the support we’ve had. We only auditioned because we wanted to do something memorable together before we graduate later this year - we have certainly achieved that!’
Hugo Ng, organiser of the competition, said: ‘Enthusiasm for singing has increased sharply among our international students and for this reason we decided to hold our first big singing competition at Aston. We are hoping it will become an annual event and that people will recognise the name of the A* Star Awards as the oriental singing competition.’
