Must Success Cost so Much? Work-Life Integration for a Transformed Workforce

When: Tuesday 2 March at 6:30pm (tea and coffee from 6pm)
Where: Sumpner Lecture Theatre
A buffet will follow the lecture.

Changes in the demographic composition of the workforce and the demonstrated difficulties in managing the work-family interface have motivated organizations to implement policies to assist employees to effectively integrate their work and family lives. Examples of such policies include day care centres and flexible work arrangements such as flexitime and job sharing. Research examining the individual and organisational outcomes of these policies has returned equivocal findings.

Prof Sam Aryee's inaugural lecture will seek to demonstrate the thesis that the myth of the separation of work and family that underpins the long hours work culture undermines the effectiveness of these policies. It will be argued that implementation of these policies requires a workplace culture change as an integral component of the strategic management of an organisation’s workforce.

This lecture will also propose an agenda for research that will generate actionable knowledge for creating a healthy work environment in which employees can flourish while contributing to an organization’s efforts to achieve and sustain competitive.

This lecture is free to attend and open to all.
