Go, go eco-power rangers!

Student switch off continues to be a success

Over 200 students in halls of residence at Aston have pledged to do to their bit to tackle climate change by becoming an Eco-Power Ranger! But rather than running around in spandex tackling villains, these students will be taking small actions to save energy – like switching off lights and appliances and putting a lid on the pan when cooking.

The Student Switch Off campaign is running in halls of residence over the whole academic year. The campaign, run in association with the NUS and WWF, gets halls of residence to compete against each other to save energy. The hall that saves the most energy gets a big party for their whole hall.

Throughout October and November there was an average reduction of 11% in electricity across the residences here at Aston University and students saved an amazing 50 tons of CO2 from being emitted.

Here is the Aston leader board for October and November:

1st = Low rise

2nd = Dalton

3rd = Lakeside

4th = Lawrence

5th = Stafford

As well as the party for the winning hall, individuals who have signed up as Eco-Power Rangers can also win prizes such as Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, tickets as well as energy-saving gadgets.
