On Wednesday 2 December staff from throughout the University, Carillion and The Wildlife Trusts worked together to create two amphibian hibernacula on the edge of the Aston Lake.
Hibernacula are loosely mounded rocks, soil and turf set into the ground which provide a safe, warm habitat for frogs and newts during the colder weather.
The project was carried out in a morning and an afternoon session. Carillion staff provided tools, equipment and lunch and The Wildlife Trusts representative guided us through how to build the structures. Aston provided some very enthusiastic and hardworking members of staff as part of the Staff Volunteering Scheme.
