Out of Hours entry to Main Building

New  procedures for gaining entry into the University outside normal working hours

To reduce the numbers of persons not authorised to be in the Main Building which will therefore reduce the theft, vandalism and assault opportunities and offer some control over people wanting to enter the Main Building at night and at weekends, we are changing the current arrangements. This will make the Main Building more secure out of normal working hours for staff and student users and their property. It has also been brought to our attention that the current arrangements are also causing great difficulties for wheelchair users because the Blue Badge car parking spaces are on the opposite side of the building - with the slope and distance involved this causes problems when users need to park and then return to their vehicle.

We are changing the arrangements for gaining entry into the Main Building outside normal working hours and at weekends by closing the current Main entrance doors and using a redesigned entrance known at present as the “Post Room entrance” – this is off Potter Street and directly opposite the Blue Badge parking bays. This entrance is being fitted with the standard University ID Card swipe reader, automatic door opening and an intercom system. Once inside the Post Room entrance, students and staff will progress past the bottom of the South Wing staircase (which will not be accessible from this route), round the corner to the enquiry hatch by the new Security Office. New doors are now located at this point and staff and students will have to swipe again to enter the main building. When staff or students leave the building during the secure times, they will also have to swipe out. This will offer us some record of persons using the building and also the number still within the building if there is any sort of emergency.

Staff and students must be in possession of a current ID card that is allocated to them and them only, to be able to swipe to gain entry.

Starting on Monday 1st June 2009, the times when an ID card will have to be used to gain entry will be as follows:

Monday to Friday 20:00 to 06:00

Saturday 13:00 until Monday 06:00

There will be other times that the building will be closed – Bank Holidays etc and you will receive notification of these in advance.
