Dear Colleagues
The creation of an Aston Cinema Club has been mooted. We are writing to you to invite your participation in the implementation of this initiative.
Background
-
Aston is incredibly culturally diverse but of course most people do not have much of a clue about each other's cultures, histories, traditions, etc.
-
Birmingham as a whole lacks a proper arts cinema. The Electric Cinema in spite of its history is a disappointment so the potential must be there to do innovative things.
-
An Arts Cinema based in Aston would be beneficial to our academic/ student community and would act as an opportunity for Aston to contribute to the wider cultural activities of the city.
Proposed Plan
-
Show one film per week during the semester on (perhaps) a Tuesday evening so as not to conflict with other activities. Thus about 30+ films a year.
-
Promote this heavily to the students, but open to anyone
-
Charge a low entry fee. If numbers are reasonable the Cinema Club can be self sustaining.
-
Emphasise films which open our eyes to different cultures - so mostly, but not exclusively, high quality art films from across the world, including documentaries.
We need to create an organising committee to supervise if not to directly decide on the program and running of the Club.
If you are interested in these plans, please subscribe to the mailing list.
We are proposing to hold an initial meeting on 22 October at 1pm in Room MB564. If you would like to actively participate and perhaps join the organising committee, please come to this meeting. Please let Julie Ottley know (j.m.e.ottley@aston.ac.uk) if you will be attending.
Thank you
