The University’s Swimming and Water Polo team are completing a 24 hour swim relay on the 6th May to help raise funds in order to attend the 13th FINA World Championships in Rome this summer.
Having received £750 in sponsorship from the University, they need to raise a further £750 to cover the cost of the trip, which they are hoping to achieve through fund raising and additional sponsorship.
The 17 day competition will see 170 nations combined of a total of 2,500 athletes challenging for the winners title with 1,500 journalists covering the event.
Arriving for the preliminary rounds on the 20th July for five days, the team will be watching the professional polo matches and swimming races, having two days to compete in friendly matches with international universities attending the event.
From attending the championships the team are hoping to increase their knowledge of the game and see how they can improve in their own level of play. Thomas Austin the Vice Chairman for the club said ‘Attending the championships will expose the team to the highest standard the sport has to offer. With some of the team not having seen a professional match before it will raise enthusiasm and team spirits and teach us how we can improve in our standard of play.’
In recent years several members of the Aston University team have joined the Aston’s Men’s team, who compete in the West Midlands Water Polo league. With the University team attending the Roma FINA World Championships, not only are they expanding Aston’s reputation as a university but are also representing the water polo talents of Birmingham.
