Will digital identity, digital currency and digital culture give us the future we deserve? There are over five billion mobile phones in use on earth, very nearly one for every man, woman and child on the planet. Increasingly mobile phones double as internet terminals, giving rise to the vision of a world with a single global digital network enfolding every human being.
What are the prospects for such a world, and how will it affect us? We will examine three specific areas: digital identity including social sites like Facebook and Twitter, digital currency including e-gold,m-pesa and bitcoin, and digital culture, focusing on how music and memes spread across the world.
Vinay Gupta is best knows as the inventor of the hexayurt, a Free/Open hardware house which is in use all over the world and being evaluated for disaster relief in Haiti and Sri Lanka as part of the Soft Development Path, a long term strategy for poverty alleviation. Vinay is an associate fellow of the Institute for Security and Resilience Studies and closely associated with the STAR-TIDES project on using digital networks to decentralize disaster relief.
