Frequently Asked Questions

1       Where do I find the AMA template?

They are available at the foot of this page for staff access only.

2       Which template should I use?

Please use the one branded for your School or IDS.

3       Can students on my Aston Certificate/Diploma be awarded an AMA?

No. If you would prefer to use AMA for your student group you will need to enrol the students on a different programme.  Please contact Registry for advice.

4       Can I award an AMA at the Module Board if the student has a borderline mark e.g. 39%?

No. The module and the AMA must be referred to the Programme Board. Only a Programme Board can make condonement and referral decisions.

5       Should we award AMA on our FCA programme after every Module Board?

You may find it easier to award your AMA at a natural break in the programme e.g. to those students who have decided  not to continue. You should award the highest award available which could be a PgCertificate and not AMA, if the student has enough credits.

6       Can a student use a module they have already received an AMA for as APL on another Aston programmed?

Yes. That is not a problem. The General Regulations concerning the volume of APL credits permitted apply as usual.

7       If a module is used for APL do students have to hand in the AMA?

No, they can keep the AMA.

8        If a student loses their AMA can the School issue a replacement?

Yes. Schools may wish to agree a fee for replacements.  Schools should check that an AMA was issued before giving a replacement. This is one reason why these regulations ask   AMA to be attached to the student record on SITS.

9        How many AMA can a student receive?

As many as allowed by their type of enrolment. For example UGT General Regulation state that associate students may enrol for, and be assessed in, individual credit-rated modules to a maximum of 60 credits in any five-year period.

10      Can I change the wording or design of the AMA for my School or programme?

No. All AMA should use the wording and design approved by Senate for consistency.
