There's a lot to do when you start university – move in, unpack and sort your room out, meet your flat and coursemates, enrol and get involved in during Aston Welcome.
When you arrive at Aston, there will be a lot of acronyms and terminology that you won't recognise. "Understanding Aston's Terminology", will give you an explanation of all Aston language that you will hear during your time.
Starting university can be a little daunting, but remember there are plenty of people around to help you. And don't forget, if you come across a problem don’t panic! Chances are it's a common problem and can be easily fixed by speaking to someone.
Here are a few tips which should help you through your first week:
-
Remember everyone is in the same situation as you. No one feels completely confident in a new place, with new people. With this in mind, pluck up the courage to knock on your neighbour's door or start up a conversation with the person sitting next to you.
-
If you're not sure what to do next, or you've got an hour spare, why not head over to the Martin Luther King multi-faith centre.
-
Don't forget there are plenty of people around for you to talk to: an Aston Auntie, a flatmate, a family member or friend from home. If you have a question relating to your course, get in touch with your Academic School or an Academic Arrival Guide who'll be happy to help you. The Hub is the place to go to access our excellent student support services.
-
The Peer Mentoring Scheme can match you with a second or final year student in one to one mentoring relationships. Your mentor will be someone who has just been through the same stage as you, who can share their knowledge and experiences and give you handy tips at every step of your time at Aston University.
