Welcome to German at Aston University!

 

Congratulations on having chosen German as your subject – we will do our best to make the next four years an exciting, challenging, invaluable and unforgettable experience.

The German programme at Aston University emphasises the practical application of language in real-life and professional situations with a strong focus on contemporary society and culture in the German-speaking countries. We offer a varied range of module choices including cinema, media studies, modern history and society, cultural studies, linguistics and translation.

Transition Resources

These downloadable resources are designed to support you with the transition from German A-level to degree level studies. Topics covered include Dictionary Skills, Developing Reading Skills and Academic Writing.

English language versions of each topic are also available with a voiceover recorded by undergraduates to help guide students through the resources. Students should first access the English language versions which provide an overview before moving to the German versions for specific activities related to the language.

Recommended Reading

As a set course book for LG1001, the German Language Skills core module, we will be using:

  • em neu 2008: Brückenkurs Deutsch als Fremdsprache: München Hueber 2009, Niveaustufe B1+; Kursbuch (ISBN: 3195016966). Arbeitsbuch (ISBN: 3195116960).

In addition, we expect students to purchase:

  • em Übungsgrammatik Deutsch als Fremdsprache“ (München: Hueber 2002) as a supplementary text book for the Grammar element of LG1001.

We also recommend:

  • Langenscheidts Großwörterbuch Deutsch als Fremdsprache

  • Das neue einsprachige Wörterbuch für Deutschlernende (latest edition: 2007)

  •  Langenscheidt: München und Berlin, ISBN 978-3-468-49041-5, and:

  • Durrell, Martin (2002): Hammer‘s German Grammar and Usage. (4th Ed.). London: Arnold

You can either purchase the two books ahead of time or buy them at the Aston bookshop when you arrive on campus.

Online Resources

Here are some web links to online exercises and teaching materials that cover similar topics and tasks to the 1st Year core language skills module and which may be useful if you want to use the summer months to prepare for October:

  • A very good resource to prepare for the Year 1 level can be found at Lektionen 1-30. The exercises progress from very simple to high intermediate/advanced and cover most of the grammatical items we revise in Year 1.

  • Work with authentic German texts at JETZT DEUTSCH LERNEN

  • Use Nancy Thuleen for an extensive collection of grammar explanations and exercises and other language activities

  • Go to Ubungsseiten DaF for a collection of exercises, texts and language games
