German Studies

Germany is one of the most important economies in Europe and boasts a vibrant cultural life. Our undergraduate German programme stresses an understanding of contemporary German society (politics, language, culture and history, economy) and a practical command of German, emphasising language as a means of communication and mutual understanding in the contemporary world.

There are a number of reasons to study German at Aston:

  • We take a contemporary approach to teaching, with small language groups, all taught in German, using real texts in everyday situations
  • All undergraduate programmes feature an integrated Year Abroad in Germany or a German-speaking country, with a choice of a work placement in a well-known and established company, a teaching assistantship in a German school or a University course at one of our many ERASMUS partner institutions
  • We use and develop innovative teaching methods, combining e-learning, lectures, independent study, and group work
  • Along with near native proficiency in written and spoken German, students also graduate with in depth understanding of the issues that shape contemporary Germany, Austria, and German-speaking Switzerland
  • We boast first-class facilities featuring the latest language laboratory software and recently refurbished teaching rooms
  • We expose our students to the full range of uses of the German language: from literature and film through to subtitling and translating
  • We are a research-led team, and our courses - in politics, literature, socio-linguistics, cinema - reflect our research expertise
