Translation Studies

First Year Modules

In Year 1, you will study translation related modules alongside your language specific modules (Language Skills core modules, History and Society modules).

The Translation Studies core modules are:

• LI1003 Introduction to Language and Communication

• LI1004 Introduction to Translation 

• LI1005 Translation Workshop

Recommended Reading

There are two books which we will refer to frequently:

• Munday, Jeremy. Introducing Translation Studies: Theories and Applications, (2nd edition), 2008, London & New York: Routledge (ISBN 978-0-415-39693-6) – This book will be used as background reading for Translation Studies core modules throughout your studies

• Fromkin, Victoria, Rodman, Robert, Hyams, Nina. An Introduction to Language (Seventh Edition). 2002, Thomson, Heinle (ISBN 0-15-508481-X)

You can either purchase the two books ahead of time or buy them at the Aston bookshop when you arrive on campus. There are also copies of these books in the Library, but you may prefer to have your own copy. In addition, we expect students to purchase good dictionaries. You will receive suggestions from your language tutors.

Online Resources

Here are some weblinks to online resources which provide useful information about translation and interpreting:

• The Chartered Institute of Linguists, a professional association which serves the interests of professional linguists throughout the world. Our translation graduates can now receive accreditation from this prestigious organization. 

• The Institute of Translation & Interpreting (ITI) is the only independent professional association of practising translators and interpreters in the United Kingdom. Our School of Languages and Social Sciences is a corporate member of ITI.

• The National Network for Translation, with plenty of interactive translation exercises. We are a member of this national network. 

• The National Network for Interpreting, with plenty of interactive interpreting exercises.

• The Directorate-General for Translation, the European Commission's in-house translation service.

• Here you can find information about the European Masters in Translation network (our MA Translation in a European Context is a member of this network).

• The online Journal of Specialised Translation has many video interviews with professional translators and articles to download.

• The European Society for Translation Studies (EST) is an international society of translation and interpreting scholars. The website has useful resources, including a long list of online journals with free access and other online resources.
