Research Interests                                                      

Carolyn joined the department in 2010, having previously worked as a Lecturer and Programme Director at the University of Birmingham’s European Research Institute. At Birmingham, she was also Deputy Director of the Institute for German Studies. Her research interests include territorial politics in Europe, comparative federalism and political communication. She is a member of the newly established UACES network on “Communicating Europe”. Since 2006, she has been acting as an advisor to the EU Committee of the Regions’  Commission for Citizenship, Governance, Institutional and External Affairs (CIVEX).

Together with Dr Nat Copsey, Carolyn managed a major EU Commission-funded project “Bringing the Policy Back in: A substantive agenda for the new Union”, where the keynote speaker was Vice-President of the EU Commission, Margot Wallström. In 2006, she ran a British Academy small research grant (£3395) investigating the European-level activities of regions from new EU member states (Poland and the Czech Republic): award number SG-42014.

Carolyn currently serves as Treasurer for the International Association for the Study of German Politics and is a Member of the Board of the German British Forum.
