Spoken Academic Discourse: English in comparison to German and Polish: an international research project
The GeWiss corpus has been published. It can be accessed after registration under
this link.
A central list of project-related publications has been made available by our German partners in Leipzig and can be accessed
here.
GeWiss is an international research project which aims to provide an empirical basis for the comparative study of spoken academic discourse in German, English and Polish. To this end, we have created corpora of two main genres: presentations by expert and student speakers (including discussions) and oral examinations.
Based on these corpora, we will analyse the key practices involved in oral academic communication, using quantitative and qualitative methods. The main research focus at Aston University has been on the following questions
- Humour in German and English research presentations
- The distribution and function of metaphors in German and English research presentations
The GeWiss research poster is available
here. It was displayed at the event
Celebrating Aston Research.
