The Literature in Society Research Forum is an informal research group which aims to facilitate intellectual exchange and debate around issues of methodology relating to the relationships between literature and society. Its central focus is the sociology of literature, understood in a broad sense and including theories and thinkers from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds. It seeks to discuss ways of approaching and analysing both the constituting effect of the social on literature and representations of the social within the literary text.
The group, based in the School of Languages and Social Sciences, holds regular informal seminars to discuss a particular text of relevance to the sociology of literature. Considered from an inter-disciplinary perspective, current research interests shared by the group include:
- Gender questions
- Culture and interculturality
- Memory
- Life writing.
