The Institute was founded in 1992. Associates of the Institute investigate a variety of topics related to language and society. The central focus of the research is the study of language, discourse and culture with respect to social processes and structures.
The Institute coordinates and promotes research in the following areas:

ISLS accomplishes its mission through research projects, publications, conferences, lectures, seminars, and visits by distinguished academics. For example, in 2010, ISLS hosted the 6th International Conference ‘Critical Link: Interpreting in a Changing Landscape’, and in 2011, the 10th International Chronos conference on ‘Tense, aspect, modality and evidentiality’.
The Institute cooperates with The Centre for Language Education Research at Aston (CLERA) on topics of Modern Language teaching and learning, with the Aston Centre for Interdisciplinary Research into Languages and Diversity (InterLanD) on topics of language policy and sociolinguistics, and with the Aston Centre for Europe (ACE) on topics of politics and history.
