To cover the cost of your tuition fees


To The School of Languages and Social Sciences offers three Home/EU fees-only bursaries (covering half of the MA tuition fees) for students with native speaker competence in English. In return, the students will complete up to six hours a week pastoral work for the School.

The exact nature of this work will be decided at the beginning of the programme but may include providing support to international Postgraduate and Junior Year Abroad students, the IELTS team, our conference and workshop organisers, academic visitors or students with special needs. The work will often take place at different times every week - depending on the projects you support.

If you wish to be considered for the bursary, you must submit an essay of approximately 1000 words along with your application on the following:

What do you consider to be your major strengths and weaknesses? How would you be able to support international students on programmes in the School of Languages and Social Sciences?

For international students

£1500 each


The School of Languages and Social Sciences offers three bursaries worth £1,500 (each) to international overseas students on all our MA programmes.

You will be considered for this bursary if you:

  • Meet the entry requirements for your programme of study (Honours Degree and IELTS score - refer to the relevant course outline for full details)
  • Submit a 2000 word essay on the topic:
'How would the receipt of a scholarship contribute to your programme of study'

PLEASE NOTE: you are not eligible to apply for these scholarships if you already hold a Commonwealth Scholarship.
