At Aston expectations regarding your ability to understand and follow lectures, participate actively in seminars, deliver effective presentations and submit appropriate written assignments are high. The Centre for English Language and Communication at Aston (CELCA), part of LSS, offers guidance on the language and skills needed for successful academic study to international students whose first language is not English.
All international undergraduate, postgraduate and research students are entitled to free English language support tutorials. The tutorials are individual (one-to-one) and last for one hour. Each international student will be allowed to attend up to five tutorials per term, not exceeding more than one tutorial per week.*
EU (non-UK) students may also be eligible for these tutorials, following an initial assessment of their English by a member of the CELCA teaching team.
*Occasionally students may be able to benefit from additional hours depending on their needs and general demand.
Our team of friendly and supportive staff can help you with:
- Improving your accuracy and fluency when using spoken and written English.
- Pronunciation.
- Specialised vocabulary used within your field of academic study.
- Giving presentations (you can practise your presentation with us and receive feedback).
- Using academic style appropriately.
- Written assignments, including dissertations/project reports.
Please note that we do not offer a proofreading service or conversation classes.
Places are offered on a first come first served basis and are subject to availability.
