Services for library users with a disability or other additional needs

Welcome to Aston University, Library & Information Services. We aim to make our resources and facilities accessible to anyone who wants to use the Library.

Please do not hesitate to contact any member of Library staff should you need any help using the Library or you would like to discuss your individual requirements. Please let us know if there is anything we could do to improve our services for you.

Although you do not have to declare your disability, it is helpful to us to ensure that we can give you the right kind of support. All information will be kept in the strictest confidence.

Contacting the Library

Your main contact in the Library is Anne Perkins, Public Services Coordinator, tel. 0121 204 4492, email a.v.perkins@aston.ac.uk.

If you prefer, you may discuss your Library needs in confidence with the Disability and Additional Needs Unit (DANU), tel. 0121 204 4711, email danu@aston.ac.uk, who can then ask the Library to set up additional services on your behalf.

If you are unable to come into the Library, you can telephone, fax, post or email us with your enquiry. You are able to renew books by telephone or by using the online renewal function on the Library catalogue http://library.aston.ac.uk/. Full details are on the Library website.

If you require your Study Support Worker to access library services on your behalf, you will need to complete an 'Authorisation for Use of Library Services' memo, which is also available from Enquiries on the ground floor of the Library. They will need to produce this memo when visiting the Library.

Access to the Library building

  • Arrangements can usually be made to park close to the Library. Contact Anne Perkins, Public Services Coordinator, in advance, Tel. 0121 204 4492, email:a.v.perkins@aston.ac.uk.
  • Access to ground floor of the Library is level with no steps. If you have difficulty accessing the entrance area, the Attendants at Reception just inside the entrance will be happy to help you.
  • There are power-assisted front doors. If you need any assistance getting into the building, please use the Intercom system to the left-hand side of the front doors.
  • At Reception there is an internal turnstile entry system (operated by swipe card) with a gate for wheelchair access.
  • A lift is available to anyone who cannot use the stairs to access the upper floors.
The lift is equipped with low-level tactile buttons, internal handrails and an audible indication of floor level reached.
During serviced opening hours please ask at Enquiries to use the lift. During the evenings and at weekends, please ask at Reception.
As the lift is immobilised during the evenings and weekends, please telephone Reception (ext 4489) when you need to use it again. Help telephones are located opposite the entrance door to each floor.
  • It is important in case of fire evacuation that you 'sign in' on the notice board beside the lift so that Security know on which floor you can be found. Please note: lifts will be immobilized during an emergency evacuation.
To provide a visual warning in the event of a fire, Bic alerters are available from Enquiries.

Toilets

There is an adapted toilet located on the back corridor of 1st floor of the Library, operated by the RADAR national key scheme. You can buy a key from Enquiries.
