UK doctoral theses are now available electronically via the Electronic Theses Online System (EThOS)
EThOS offers free access to the full text of UK theses. The service will digitise theses on request into pdf format rather than on microfilm to ensure a clearer copy is produced from the original.
How do I request a thesis?
Go to http://ethos.bl.uk You will be given instructions on how to order theses via the EThOS live site. You will also be able to download digital theses held on the system and order paper theses for digitisation.
There will not normally be any charge to you for downloading a digitised thesis.
You will need to register to use the system and login before you can order theses, though you will be able to search without registering.
The Basic Search is for quick and easy searching. Type your keywords into the Search box. If you want to search for a specific phrase, type it within double quotes. There is further help available via the search tips.
You do not need to complete any Inter Library Loan forms as you deal directly with EThOS. However, in exceptional circumstances, you may still need to use a conventional thesis loan form to obtain theses from institutions that do not currently digitise theses via the EThOS service and for non-UK theses.
You can make use of the tracking and account system for checking the status of your request.
If you prefer the theses in paper or CD format, you can pay for this additional service when ordering.
Microfilm readers will no longer be required to view UK theses.

US and other overseas theses
These are not available on inter-library loan. Theses can be ordered by individuals using the UMI Dissertations Express website http://disexpress.umi.com/dxweb for express delivery to your home or workplace.
Applications for material from overseas
A large amount of material published outside the UK is available from libraries in this country. It is possible to obtain material from almost anywhere in the world but remember that the time needed to trace the item may be months not weeks. The cost of applications abroad is very high and before an application is made we will always return the form to you asking if you wish to continue with the request.
This is a special service from the British Library which allows material to be obtained by the next working day, or even in 2 hours for an extra charge. The request must be made before 3:00 pm.
You will be asked to pay for this service.
An article supplied by Secure Electronic Delivery in 2 hours costs £29.38 and in 24 hours costs £18.80. An item supplied on loan, dispatched by 1st class post in 2 hours costs £31.55 and in 24 hours costs £22.50. For details of articles supplied by post or fax, please contact the Library Help desk on 0121 204 4525.
Paying for your own Inter-Library Loan requests
You can also pay for your own requests. The cost is £9.00 per item on loan and £5.82 for an article, and this is payable in advance.
