Access to electronic resources from off-campus via the Proxy server

Whilst many electronic journals can be accessed using your Aston University network username and password, there are still some resources where access is based on the PC’s IP address and restricted to machines in Aston’s domain (*.aston.ac.uk).

However, staff and students who wish to access these resources from off-campus can do so by using Aston’s web proxy.

The proxy is a machine on campus through which you can access resources from off campus if your browser is configured to do so. The journal provider's license terms are adhered to, since you need to supply your University username and password (the same one which you would use to log into University PCs) if off campus.

Manually configuring your browser with a list of sites to fetch via Aston’s proxy would be difficult. Fortunately most browsers support automatic proxy configuration where the browser will check with a web server whether it has the latest configuration and download if necessary when it first starts up. Please refer to the instructions below on how to tell your browser to use the automatic proxy method.
