SCONUL Access

SCONUL Access

Aston University is a member of the SCONUL Access scheme.
This is a reciprocal scheme offering visitor access to the Library to:
Staff and researchers (band A)
Part-time, distance learning and placement
students (band B)
Taught postgraduates (band C)

If you are band A, B or C, you can also borrow books from other member libraries.

If you are a full-time Undergraduate student you are eligible for a visitor card to use Aston University Library for reference study purposes.

Please note: from Monday 25 March 2013 - further notice:

  • Day passes will not be issued
  • There will be no access to the Library at any time for visitors with a SCONUL Reference Only card.

This is due to our busy examination period and a refurbishment which is taking place over the summer vacation.

How do I join?

If you are from a member library, you will need to complete an application form online at: http://www.access.sconul.ac.uk. You will receive an email from your library confirming your eligibility and the band which applies to you, plus the finishing date.  Please print this message and bring it to Aston University Library, together with your University ID card, current proof of address and two passport sized photographs between the hours of 09:00 - 17:00 weekdays.
You will need to complete a registration form, either in advance or a form is available from the Library.  Your visitor card will be ready for you to collect within one week of submitting the registration form, between the hours of 09:00 - 17:00 weekdays. The card may be used for borrowing books and you will need to show your card to Reception staff to gain access to the building each time you visit.

Is there a charge?

No

Can I borrow books?

If you are band A, B or C, you may borrow a total of 6 books at any one time. (You will not be able to borrow short loan books or journals.) Fines will be charged on overdue books. If you are band R then this is Reference only membership so you will not be able to borrow books.

Can I access electronic resources?

You can access many of our online resources (with some restrictions) if you bring in your own laptop and request a username and password from the Help desk.

How long does my membership last?

Membership lasts for the length of your placement, duration of your Library registration or 3 years, whichever is the shorter. This is renewable on application.
