Cognitive Functioning & Rehabilitation in Dementias (2 days)

Two days of teaching and training on working with older adults with cognitive impairment.

Practical, evidence-based and theoretical approaches combine to produce a course suitable for practitioners such as psychologists or occupational therapists working in rehabilitation of older adults (with dementias) wishing to consolidate, update or extend their knowledge. It is also appropriate for those at earlier stages of their careers who wish to specialise in this area of rehabilitation. The workshops focus on the application of theoretical knowledge to clinical rehabilitative practice and management. It is led by experienced senior practitioners/researchers.

 

Day 1:

Ageing, Dementia, Rehabilitation & Management: From concern to rehabilitation and coping

  • Introduction:(i) What is “normal”ageing? (ii) Contributors to healthy cognition (iii) When changing cognition becomes a real concern (iv) Dementias –the key facts (v) Risk factors and prevention
  • The person is still there! Presentation of dementias and complications: diagnoses, key features. Examples, case studies, confusions between dementias.
  • Cognitive stimulation: Interactive practical session
  • Cognitive rehabilitation: Managing behaviours in dementias (not frontal)
  • Dementia Care Mapping (DCM): A person centred approach.

Day 2:

Introduction to an understanding & management of Frontal lobe impairment: Working with patients with frontal lobe damage or frontal dementias

  • Introduction: (i) Overview of brain structures (ii) Frontal Lobe structure & normal function
  • Frontal lobe disorders and dysfunctions, and how they present: Presentation, Case histories
  • Executive dysfunction - case presentation and management strategies: Making interventions work
  • Management of Frontal Lobe disorders: Presentation and Discussion –relating it all to your issues with a focus on managing aggression and other anti-social issues.
The fees are as follows: 1 day without assessment £175; 2 days without assessment £340. Participants with a degree or equivalent professional qualification wishing to gain Masters level (level 7) credits can register for the whole module with assessment for £840. T
