About the course

This module will enable clinicians to develop and deliver rehabilitative service for people with tinnitus and related difficulties such as hyperacusis.  It will enable students to develop a a systematic understanding of this this area and develop a critical awareness of current problems and/or new insights in managing patients with tinnitus and / or hyperacusis.

Module outcomes

Knowledge and understanding

  • Demonstrate a detailed understanding of the physiological mechanisms, demographics and epidemiology of tinnitus and hyperacusis
  • Demonstrate critical understanding of a wide range of tools used in assessing and managing tinnitus and hyperacusis.

  • Demonstrate independence in researching, planning and writing assignments
  • Develop the ability to reflect on and evaluate own work.

Professional skills     

  • Explore current theory and practice in the selection, fitting and evaluation of hearing aids in relation to tinnitus management
  • Demonstrate the ability to select, undertake and interpret audiological assessment results relating to tinnitus informed by research at the forefront of the discipline
  • Develop and apply advanced technical expertise, skills and knowledge to provide appropriate interventions, underpinned by critical appraisal of relevant literature 
  • Analyse and critique current principles and skills involved in patient history taking and explore its effectiveness in clinical practice
  • Critically evaluate counselling theories, research findings and therapeutic methods with the aim of developing a personal approach to working with patients with tinnitus or hyperacusis 
  • Critically appraise the way in which clinical information and decision-making is shared in a clinical setting between all stakeholders
  • Explore and critically evaluate how to obtain and present information regarding tinnitus and hyperacusis within a clinical governance framework.
