Assistant Audiologist Competency Training Package

Duration: Study is flexible to meet the learning needs of the participants. Assistants may choose to study all or only part of the entire package. Workshops are on the 25th, 26th and 27th June 2013 and the assessments are on 3rd, 4th and 5th September 2013

Aims

This training package is designed for assistant Audiologists in the NHS and private sector. It complements e-Learning for Healthcare (eLfH) e-Audiology session material to provide underpinning theory for the areas of assessment. There is also a work-based element where Assistants practice their skills under supervision of their work-based supervisor/senior colleagues.

 

 

 

Summary of content    

Once the necessary pre-requisite e-learning sessions have been completed by the participants in their own study time, a series of workshops will take place in Spring 2012 where practical clinical skills will be taught. These workshops will cover the following topics:
  • Day 1: Otoscopy and impression-taking
  • Day 2: Pure-tone audiometry and tympanometry
  • Day 3: Hearing aid maintenance and review
After further training in the workplace these clinical skills will be assessed at the University, with the 3 assessment days arranged in the same configuration as the workshops.

Workshops and assessments will take place on:
  • 14th, 15th and 16th May 2012 - first round of workshops
  • 3rd, 4th and 5th September 2012 - first assessment block
  • Dates TBC - second round of workshops
  • Dates TBC - second assessment block.
Resits are within week TBC.

Module outcomes

The package is spilt into 2 areas, Core Professional Competency and Core Clinical Competency.

Core clinical competency will be supported by workshops in our custom built clinical skills laboratory and clinical competence will be assessed by University Appointed Assessors, also on campus.

Core Professional Competency consists of:

  • Unit 1: Health and Safety in the Workplace
  • Unit 2: Professionalism
  • Unit 3: Communication
  • Unit 4: Referrals and advice

Core Clinical Competency consists of:

  • Unit 5: Otoscopy
  • Unit 6: Pure-tone audiometry
  • Unit 7: Tympanometry
  • Unit 8: Impression-taking
  • Unit 9: Hearing aid maintenance
  • Unit 10: Review and aftercare for the hearing aid user
