Case Study- Peter Reddy, Psychology
This is a low impact / small scale intervention that I used with students in my final year module. I let seminar groups form but I first pointed out to students that:
-
Despite Aston being a multicultural community, students often segregate into ethnic, national and cultural groups.
-
It may be important for students to feel comfortable in doing this but graduates report regretting that they had not spent more time building relationships across these boundries.
-
A multicultural community is a resource - use it to build skills, confidence, experience and your CV - all important for employability, work with colleagues and patients.
-
I then encourage them to consider stepping outside their comfort zone and working outside their usual friendship, ethnic, national or cultural groups for this 10 class module. Quite a number do so.
