Case study: Pawan Budhwar, Business
My lectures have focused mainly on the following learning objectives:
To define what culture is
To explain to students why knowledge about different cultures is important for their work and social life
To explain various aspects of cross-cultural communication and cultural differences
To develop strategies how to deal with cross-cultural conflicts in study groups or other groups
Working and living with people from diverse background means that it is important to make an effort to prepare students for work and social life. When teaching a business class I provide business related examples, e.g. knowledge about different cultures is important for economic aspects (globalisation) – by doing so, students can relate to what I am saying more effectively. There are many DVDs available which focus on business and culture – I received a booklet from Insight Media which contains 85 new additions of management on DVD. It is always useful for lecturers to be interested in finding out what is available to help them in their teaching.
To make the purpose of the lecture effective it is important to support everything you say with evidence, especially with any recent examples conveyed in the media because students are more likely to familiar with them. In my lectures I always make an effort to provide evidence, use examples, case-studies, videos, and get students engaged in class exercises and role plays for effective learning. This is better teaching practice compared to standing at the front talking continuously for an hour, in which case the students are likely to loose attention.
I give students the opportunity to discuss set questions with the person they are sitting next to and then ask students around the lecture theatre for their responses. I wait after the lecture for students who may want to ask questions but are too shy to ask in front of the whole group - if I instead tell them to come in my office hours then I am likely to loose them.
