Case study: Fiona Copland, Languages and Social Sciences

It may be useful to:

  • Mix groups for assessed work.

  • Encourage students to find 'critical friends' among their peers to read through their word to make suggestions.

  • Encourage a culture of reading by starting a book group.

  • Provide varied assessments so that particular literacy skills are not always privileged.

  • When students begin university, they could have a written task to do.  This is not assessed but would allow tutors to spot problem areas and advise students to go to LDC or CELCA for support.

  • Try to encourage students to be aware of their own strengths and weaknesses.  As I deal with language and literacy, then I would try to find ways to help students assess and help themselves. A website such as http://owl.english.purdue.edu/ is very useful in this respect.
