Welcome to the new year with Aston Formula Student 2011!

The Aston Formula Student team has successfuly registered with FSUK 2011. (Car number to be confirmed)

The team are ready to start building the car. Components will be made for testing and then for the actual car while the designs will be reassessed so the best possible design outcome is used.

The team attended the Motor Show 2011 at the NEC to speak to suppliers and learn from the experts. This was a great opportunity to ask about the the opinion on current designs on our car and how improvements could be made for a stronger performance. All in all, it was a great day out seeing inspiring designs and competition cars from other universities. This occasion also allowed us to speak to companies about sponsorship opportunities and build relationships with suppliers.

We are now looking forward to our sponsorship event held in February.

The design Freeze!
All the design components are finalised and each sub team with justified design decisions for each part. The team worked many hours to put all the components together in one whole assembly so only minor alterations could be made after this assembly. Each component was analysed with relevant statistics and FEA data. From this point on, the finalised design can only be modified with a valid reason.

Well done to the team for putting in all the hours before end of term and end of the year.

Merry Christmas and a Happy new year all.

First Design Review
The first design review for the 2011 Formula Student team. It was an opportunity for sub-teams of the car to demonstrate their concepts and the directions taken. The team was able to come together with each component to integrate parts into the whole car assembly, and highlight any areas of improvement. The concepts were then assessed by past team managers, technicians and project supervisors. They provided useful information about how designs can be manipulated for an improved engineering concept and gave some very positive feedback.

"Learn to Win"
Mid October the team had an opportunity to visit the 'Learn to Win' event at the IMechE Institute in London. The sub-teams were able to ask Formula Student judges about engineering queries, meet their competitors, and see winning cars that have successfully completed the Formula Student competition. The trip was very successful and of great benefit to the project this year.

The beginning of something special...
First Tuesday of the year, after the first team meeting and workshop induction, the day was followed by laser quest and a meal to encourage team bonding. Sean and Chris's team won the two games respectively.

Car 89 Final Design Review
The final design review of Aston's 2009 entrant has taken place and all major components are now finalised and awaiting manufacture.

Chassis Tooling Machining
The 2009 car will have a redesigned rear chassis that improves the packaging of critical components. Due to the size of the Tooling it is one of the few parts that we have manufactured out of house and we continued our link this year with Puremedium CNC in Nuneaton. Autosport Show, NEC
The Formula Student team made it's annual 15 minute pilgrimage to the NEC for the Autosport Show. The show proved to be worth the travelling time, giving the team an opportunity to meet up with sponsors face to face and also make new partnerships with industry.
