As a student living in Birmingham when I was looking for a University to apply for, there was a selection to choose from right on my door step. I enjoyed studying chemistry at A Level and wanted to enhance my understanding further in this field, many of the Universities had this opportunity available, but after reading their respective prospectus I established that pure chemistry was not for me. I wanted to see the larger picture as it were. Aston provided a course that not only included core modules of chemistry but also aspects of; chemical engineering, biochemistry and business.
The laboratory periods provide hands on experience and allow integration of knowledge perceived in lectures. The lecturers themselves have all had previous experience working in the “real world” and as such pass on relevant knowledge to students. Together with their approachable nature and outgoing personalities they have made my time as an undergraduate student a memorable and enjoyable experience.
For my sandwich placement I applied to Exova Laboratories. The extensive use of analytical and extraction techniques improved my confidence and laboratory understanding. For a chemist, having industrial experience and degree from Aston University on your CV sets you apart from the rest. I am currently part of the Biomaterials Research Group, developing injectable intra-ocular lenses with impregnated radiopaque contrast agents as part of my PhD.
