Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor
Professor
Michael Wood read Mechanical Engineering at Aston University on an
industry-sponsored sandwich basis whilst employed by the Lucas Group. After
several years of postgraduate experience he returned to his studies on a
part-time basis, gaining an MSc in electromechanical Computer-Aided-Design
whilst working as Senior Engineer within a design consultancy contracted to the
Ministry of Defence.
Subsequently Michael gained his Total Technology PhD in Engineering Science
whilst funded by the construction consultancy-house, Harry Stanger.
Consequently, for nearly 25 years he has been a consultant to industry and
commerce, also UK defence and European organisations. His experience covers a
broad range of engineering disciplines. He is research active, where his
principal interests centre on vibration-based techniques for locating damage
within heterogenous-material structures and also integrated design of offshore
renewable energy systems. In addition, he undertakes university teaching on a
guest or visiting basis, including engineering design at Aston University.
Michael is a consultant to the Directorates-General of the European Commission
for Research and Technological Development (DG-RTD) and the Joint Research
Centre (DG-JRC), and also the Nuclear Safety Directorate of the UK Health and
Safety Executive. He has designed European Fighter Aircraft fuselage and
Trident-missile body configurations for MoD test purposes, also
electromechanical equipment used in the development of Airbus and Boeing
aircraft designs. Lloyds of London has utilised his expertise in the analysis
and assessment of complex test apparatus for use in MoD facilities. He also
undertakes design assessments and engineering analyses as a
consultant-troubleshooter for a number of clients within the engineering
sector.
Professor Wood has recently completed his remit as a Royal Academy of
Engineering Visiting Professor to the Faculty of Engineering at the University
of Nottingham. Having been appointed as a Visiting Professor at Aston
University in 2009, he is now a Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor
to the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Professor Wood has just been
appointed as a Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor to the
Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sheffield.
