Ian Bennion is Professor of Optoelectronics in the Department of Electronic Engineering & Applied Physics at the University of Aston, Birmingham, UK.
Previously, he spent 16 years at Plessey Research Caswell Ltd, latterly GEC-Marconi Materials Technology Ltd, where he headed a department of 18 scientists and engineers carrying out research into optoelectronic devices and their applications in communications, signal processing, optical switching and optical interconnects. He has been extensively involved in EU research programmes.
He is a Fellow of the IEE and of the Institute of Physics (UK), and a Member of the Optical Society of America and of the IEEE.

Research interests
Guided-wave optical and optoelectronic devices; fibre gratings; fibre optic sensors; biophotonics; nonlinear optical devices; ultrafast optoelectronics; optical communications and signal processing systems.
