Professor Ashok Kochhar

Profile 
I joined Aston University on 1st January 1999 as the founding Head of the School of Engineering and Applied Science and Professor of Manufacturing Systems and Management. I stepped down from the position of Executive Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science on 31st August 2008. I am currently on Sabbatical for the year 2009.

My earlier appointments include Lucas Professor of Manufacturing Systems Engineering, and Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), now University of Manchester. Prior to UMIST I held successive appointments as Research Fellow, Lecturer, Reader and Professor of Manufacturing Systems Engineering, from 1974 to 1992, at the University of Bradford.

I started my working life as an Engineering Apprentice and Graduate Engineer at Rolls-Royce.

I served as a a member of the United Kingdom Research Assessment Exercise 2008 Sub-Panel for Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering. I was also a member of the RAE 2001 Panel for Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering. 

Qualifications & Education 

  • BSc (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering External Degree of the University of London, 1970

  • PhD in Control and Systems Engineering, University of Bradford, 1975
