Marie Curie Actions

Aston Institute of Photonics has been awarded in 2011-2012 four Marie Curie Intra-European and Incoming International Fellowships.

The awards will allow Drs. David Saez, Zuxing Zhang, Tatiana Habruseva Jianfeng Li  to work in the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies for two years. 

 The projects will enhance Aston Photonics activities in the field of laser science, telecommunications and sensing.

EPSRC

 

Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies together with University College London was awarded £4.5 M EPSRC Programme Grant UNLOC.

The aim of the proposed research is to develop, through theory and experiment, disruptive approaches to unlocking the capacity of future information systems that go beyond the limits of current optical communications systems. The research will combine techniques from information theory, coding, study of advanced modulation formats, digital signal processing and advanced photonic concepts to make possible breakthrough developments to ensure a robust communications infrastructure beyond tomorrow.

Bragg grating
A recent collaboration between members of the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies and colleagues in Denmark and Cyprus resulted in the first Bragg gratings recorded in optical fibres fabricated from TOPAS cyclic olefin copolymer.

The significance of this result was recognised by the journal chosen for publication, Electronics Letters, which chose to highlight the work in a news article accompanying the paper.
