The research carried out with the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies spans a range from basic science and engineering through to the creation of prototype devices and system demonstrators. The more fundamental work is supported by the European Research Council, UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Royal Society, the Wellcome Trust, the Leverhulme Trust, NATO, EC Programme INTAS, European Research Council, EU Framework Programme 7 Marie Curie Actions and the British Council.

Once we are in a position to exploit a particular line of research, we generally seek collaboration with appropriate industrial partners. This process is facilitated by a number of organisations, including EU Framework Programme 7, the UK Technology Strategy Board, the EU Eureka scheme, European Research and Development Fund, the CASE award system and Knowledge Transfer Partnerships. We are very grateful to these organisations who support the difficult transition from research laboratory proof-of-concept through to industrial demonstrator.
