Aston University has recently been awarded a £400,000 grant for the
renovation and modernisation of a research laboratory for the reduction
of carbon emissions. This prestigious grant was generously awarded by
the Wolfson Foundation and its trustees, and further enhances the
Bioenergy Research Group (BERG) s' commitment to maintaining its
pre-eminent position at a regional, national and a European level.
The
grant provided by the Wolfson Foundation will fund the refurbishment of
2 new state of the art laboratories, post graduate facilities and an
exhibition centre, thereby creating a "world class" showcase bioenergy
laboratory suite in the heart of the Chemical Engineering and Applied
Chemistry (CEAC) building.
Focussing on providing a solid foundation for sustained growth in
research activity for the next 10 years and beyond, the new
laboratories will support the new SUPERGEN Bioenergy project by
providing a coherent and integrated micro-processing facility.
The new facilities will also be used to address key research
activities such as the development of new processes and products
including; novel reactive and catalytic cracking processes for lignin
rich materials from second generation bioethanol production. In
addition to this, work carried out in the labs will support fundamental
research areas such as; developing new methods for the analysis and
characterisation of biomass and products from conversion.
This development is an exciting opportunity to build on and develop
the leading edge bioenergy research carried out at Aston University.
Renovation work commences in early spring 2007 and is expected to last
until September 2008, in time for the new academic year.
