The School of Engineering and Applied Science carries out research that is relevant to the current and future needs of society. All our staff are engaged in research and, in comparison to most UK universities, an unusually large proportion of them operate research projects linked to industry.
Our research is recognised internationally: over half our research funding comes from international sources. We also receive support from UK Government, research councils and charities. Many of our research projects tackle strategic priorities such as energy, information and communication technologies (ICT), and healthcare technologies.
The School is investing in people and facilities so that it can continue to focus research in strategic areas. We have founded the
European Bioenergy Research Institute building on our outstanding track record in bio-energy. And our
Photonics Research Institute is globally famous for its work on sensors, lasers and optical networks. Not only is it working on solutions of direct relevance to companies but also on fundamental research which is likely to shape our world of sensors, information and communications 30 years from now.
